The MPI Grassroots Peacebuilding Mentors Training Program Midterm Workshop brought together a dynamic group of mentors for an immersive three-day experience. Held at the serene Malagos Garden Resort in Davao City from October 23 to October 25, 2023, the workshop aimed to foster deep connections, stimulate innovation, and generate transformative project proposals. Facilitated by the dynamic duo, Ashok and Florina Xavier, and Ambrosio “Brosh” Amper, a mentor from Phase 2 Batch 1 of the program, this workshop marked a pivotal moment in the mentorship journey of the participants.
Building Foundations: The workshop commenced with a powerful introduction session, where the former MPI Director Christine Vertucci, encouraged the mentors on their mentoring journey. The group then transitioned outdoors for a check-in, where the mentors formed a circle and shared significant thoughts or experiences over the past six months. They were then introduced to the four levels of competence, urging mentors to reflect on their mentees' progress. The "Introduction of Mentees" session provided a platform for mentors to share their mentees' initiatives, paving the way for a collaborative and supportive atmosphere.
Exploring Challenges: In sessions such as "Discomfort, Disconnect, and Feelings," mentors engaged in activities to explore challenges in communication and trust. The "Frameworks of Building Support" session delved into the responsibilities and actions essential for effective mentoring. Small group and big group discussions encouraged mentors to share experiences, fostering a culture of openness and support.
Connecting on a Deeper Level: The workshop took a reflective turn with the "Power of Goodness" session, exploring self-care through stories of non-violent conflict resolution. The tour of Malagos Garden Resort in the afternoon became a metaphor for mentoring relationships, emphasizing patience and continuity. The "Building Deep Connections" activity allowed mentors to pair up, fostering a deeper understanding of each other's personalities and values.
Points of Connection: In the "Points of Connection" activity, mentors explored strategies to navigate interactions and establish meaningful connections with their mentees. Reflective exercises, such as System Tree Reflection, provided valuable insights into mentors' evolving perspectives and the solutions they’ve come up with to the challenges they face with their mentees.
Predictable Phases of Mentoring: The session on "Predictable Phases of Mentoring" guided mentors through the mentorship cycle, focusing on preparation, negotiation, enabling growth, and closure. Ashok introduced Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), emphasizing a positive and solution-oriented approach to engaging and supporting their mentees.
Project Proposals: Seeds for Positive Change: In the second phase of the Grassroots Peacebuilding Mentors Training Program, MPI is setting aside a small fund for follow-up peacebuilding and mentoring activities of the mentors.
One of the sessions in the three-day workshop was dedicated to brainstorming and creating possible project proposals that will promote peacebuilding and the formation of peacebuilding mentors’ groups. During this activity, three mentor teams were able to showcase their creativity and commitment to strengthening and expanding the network of local grassroots peacebuilders in the region.
Closing Program: Artistic Reflections and Future Hopes: The workshop concluded on a high note with an expressive art activity, symbolic candlelighting, singing, certificate distribution, and mentors sharing heartfelt reflections. The closing program encapsulated the transformative journey experienced by the mentors.
